History
The College of Horticulture & Forestry Sciences at Huazhong Agricultural University was established in February 2002 by merging the former Department of Horticulture and the Department of Forestry. The college's history can be traced to a branch of the Hubei Province Department of Agricultural Sciences in 1902 and the Hubei Provincial Agricultural College's Department of Horticulture in 1940. Over the past 100 years, the College has been through many ups and downs with the nation’s destiny and the pulse of the time. It has made a huge contribution to the advancement of the national agricultural and forestry personnel, landscape architect training, horticulture technology, and the development of related industries.
The college adheres to the Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) motto “learn and practice, achieve and help to achieve” and upholds the tradition of educating students to “combine intelligence with hard work, integrate knowledge with practice” constantly innovating and progressive development.
The beautiful campus is one of the largest in China (4.9 km2), surrounded by natural lakes. The college has two sister buildings, with a cumulative area of 20,800 square meters, an on-campus greenhouse, and a high-standard field base of more than 50 acres. The campus is also a neighbor to many major universities and research institutes, shopping centers, excellent schools, and kindergartens, making it an ideal place for education, scientific research, and living.
Horticulture earned a score of A+ and Landscape Architecture earned a score of B+ in the fourth round of the national discipline review
Horticulture was ranked first in the third round of the national discipline review
Landscape Architecture was approved as a first-level discipline and authorized to offer doctorate degrees
Olericulture was approved as a National Key (Cultivation) Discipline
Forestry Science was approved as a second-level discipline and authorized to offer postgraduate degrees
Landscape Architecture became the first batch of first level disciplines authorized for postgraduate and doctoral degrees
The Botanical Garden and Ornamental Horticulture were approved to offer postgraduate in Forestry Science
The Department of Forestry Science and the Department of Horticulture merged into the College of Horticulture & Forestry Sciences
Horticulture was approved as a first-level discipline and authorized to offer postgraduate and doctoral degrees
The College was approved to set up a postdoctoral research institute in Horticulture
The College was authorized to offer postgraduate degrees in Ornamental Horticulture
Pomology was listed as a national key discipline
The Forestry discipline was authorized to offer postgraduate degrees in Landscape Plants
Pomology was authorized to offer a doctoral degree
The Department of Horticulture was changed to the Department of Landscape Architecture, and the same teachers and students formed the Department of Forestry and the Department of Horticulture of Huazhong Agricultural College
Hubei Agricultural College and the Agriculture College of Wuhan University merged into the Department of Horticulture of Huazhong Agriculture College
Hubei Province Established Hubei Agricultural College and set up the Department of Horticulture and the Department of Forestry
The Agriculture College of Wuhan University Established the Department of Forestry and the Department of Horticulture
