The College of Horticulture & Forestry Sciences (CHFS) of Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) convened an interactive session for international students and foreign faculty on Friday, May 24, 2024. The event aimed to strengthen connections, share experiences, and promote a more enriching environment for both students and faculty from abroad.
Vice Dean Xu Qiang opened the session with welcoming remarks, emphasizing the college’s dedication to both the academic and personal well-being of international students. He also stressed the importance of maintaining rigorous academic standards and upholding research ethics in scientific endeavors. Wang Zhongjian, representing the International Students Office of Graduate School, spoke about the college’s strong foundation in world-class disciplines. He emphasized the availability of excellent mentors, a welcoming international environment, and a focus on international collaboration. Xu Zileng from the college graduate office provided valuable guidance to students by delivering a detailed presentation on graduation procedures and requirements, addressing any specific concerns raised by the students. Dr. Shoaib Munir moderated the interactive session.
To create a lively and interactive atmosphere, Hafiz Muhammad Kashif, a doctoral student from Pakistan, facilitated an icebreaker activity with a trivia quiz about college and international student life. Questions were about the college’s departments, the number of faculty, student enrollment figures, and the English name of the National Key Laboratory of Horticultural Crops. This activity provided a fun and informative way for international students to learn more about the college and laboratory, promoting a deeper understanding.
Foreign faculty, Robert Larkin and Munenori Kitagawa, along with college staff, actively participated in the discussion. They provided valuable insights and solutions to the questions and concerns raised by international students. The session promoted a space for open communication and experience sharing. Both students and faculty expressed enthusiasm for future collaborations, including cultural exchange activities, internationalization initiatives, and scientific training programs. This collaboration aims to broaden international students’ horizons and improve communication channels within the college community.
